‘Build trust through governance’ ICSA urges Scottish organisations

London, 27 March 2015 – Public confidence in organisations has been severely dented since the financial crisis and trust and transparency are the watchwords of today. Where does the responsibility for good governance lie, however, and who can organisations rely on to put the right governance arrangements in place?

“Governance is a board level responsibility and the primary responsibility for its implementation lies with the company secretary,” says Simon Osborne, Chief Executive of ICSA, the chartered membership and qualifying body for professionals working in governance, risk and compliance, including company secretaries. “Company secretaries are the guardians of good governance and businesses and other organisations would do well to make better use of their expertise to cut the risk of governance failures.”

Simon will be addressing senior governance professionals at an event organised by ICSA’s Scottish Network in Glasgow on 30 March. He will offer practical insights into how organisations can get the most out of the company secretary role, the impact on the role of changes in the business environment and the effect they are having for all players in the boardroom.

In particular, he will present research by Henley Business School which has shown that there is a need for a qualified company secretary at the highest levels within the public, private and voluntary sectors to help steer boards through the challenging governance issues that they are increasingly faced with.

The event, which will take place in the offices of Burness Paull LLP, 120 Bothwell Street, Glasgow G2 7JL, is free to attend but booking is essential. Places can be booked online at https://www.icsa.org.uk/about-us/regional-branches-groups/scottish-network.
