London, 28 September 2017 – ICSA: The Governance Institute is organising a conference to help academy governance professionals meet the challenges of the sector by providing them with the tools to deliver continuous improvement. Taking place at the Hallam Conference Centre in central London on Friday 6 October, the conference will include keynote speeches by Sir David Carter, National Schools Commissioner, Department for Education (DfE); Mike Sheridan, Regional Director, London, Ofsted; and Brian Lightman, Director, Lightman Consulting and Former General Secretary, ASCL.
“Academy trusts face challenges on a number of fronts, including the perennial challenge of ensuring that good governance results in outstanding pupil achievement. We have put together this one-day conference to explore some of the key governance challenges faced by academy trust boards and to equip delegates with the tools they need to get to grips with such issues as insolvency; partnerships with members and stakeholders; board development and succession planning,” says conference chair Louise Thomson, Head of Policy (Not for Profit) at ICSA: The Governance Institute.
Keynote speaker Sir David Carter, National Schools Commissioner, Department for Education (DfE) will present the key governance themes emerging from the DfE’s new governance handbook and competency frameworks. Other speakers include:
- Graeme Hornsby, School Business Management Consultancy Ltd and Specialist Advisor at New Schools Network who will be advising delegates on the vital importance of recognising and managing conflicts of interests and loyalty
- Stephen Morales, CEO at NASBM who will be offering tips and guidance on approaches to sustainable funding and showing how multi-academy trusts can demonstrate financial control
- Dr Kate Chhatwal, Director, Southwark Teaching School Alliance and Chair of Standards, STEP Academy Trust will be focusing on how to maximise the impact of the board
- Matthew Robb, Managing Director, Parthenon – EY, Ernst & Young LLP will be looking at succession planning and considering how trusts can get the right arrangements in place to develop a culture of continuous improvement in both the boardroom and in the schoolroom
- Panellists Michelle Doyle Wildman, Acting CEO, PTA UK; David Gracie, Vice Chair, Green Spring Education Trust and Director, Global Entity Management Legal Services, KPMG; and Brian Lightman will be reflecting on what a good stakeholder engagement plan looks like and discussing how members can work with trusts to maximise their impact as part of the wider stakeholder group.
