Good governance and accountability are key themes of ICSA’s autumn conference

London, 30 August 2018 – Strong school governance is based around strategic leadership, robust challenge and support, and accountability on educational performance. It can be hard to achieve, however, which is why ICSA: The Governance Institute will be exploring some of the key governance challenges faced by multi-academy trust boards at its 2018 Academy Governance Conference at the Hallam Conference Centre in London on 5 October. Based around the theme of ‘Delivering excellence in an age of accountability’, the conference will focus on the capabilities needed to meet these challenges.

Peter Swabey, Policy and Research Director at ICSA comments:

“Academy trusts have an increasingly important role in the education system, with academies growing in size and number each year. As children only get one chance of a good education and very large sums of public money are at stake, it is vital that appropriate systems of oversight and decision-making are in place so that parents, carers, pupils and schools can have confidence that the money spent and the governance arrangements in place will deliver the best outcomes for pupils. This conference offers delegates the chance to learn about the latest in governance best practice and supports the professionalisation and recognition of the role of governance in academy schools.”

The conference, which will be chaired by Katie Paxton-Doggett, Author and Independent Consultant and feature a keynote address by Leora Cruddas, CEO of FASNA, will focus on the following areas:

  • Building Trusts: MAT leadership and coherence of vision, strategy and operations
  • MAT governance case study: Ark
  • Maintaining the relationship between boards and local governing bodies
  • Learning from the corporate sectors: Is your board getting the right information?
  • Effective financial oversight for boards
  • Recruitment strategies for an effective trustee board.

Confirmed speakers include: Katy Theobald, Ambition School Leadership; Anna Machin, Ark; Hannah Catchpool, RSM; and a representative from the National Governance Association.
