London, 16 September 2016 – ICSA: The Governance Institute has today welcomed the decision of the Business, Innovation, and Skills (BIS) Committee to launch an inquiry on corporate governance, believing that an informed and robust examination of a number of important issues is long overdue.
Peter Swabey, Policy and Research Director commented: “Trust in businesses of all kinds and confidence in their effective governance are both at a low ebb. The terms of reference of the inquiry address a number of significant matters such as executive pay, directors’ duties and the composition of boardrooms, including worker representation and gender balance in executive positions.
“The company secretary, the UK’s primary governance professional, is ideally placed to understand the very real need for both change in some areas and consistency in others and to think through the changes that need to be made to minimise the risk of unforeseen consequences, some of which have bedevilled previous corporate governance reform. ICSA has been working on a number of constructive ideas to address the issues of modern governance across all sectors and we will be delighted to share these with the committee”.
