Lord Hunt of Wirral, Sir Roger Carr and Sir Richard Olver elected Honorary Fellows of ICSA
The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) is pleased to announce that it has awarded honorary fellowship to The Right Hon The Lord Hunt of Wirral MBE, Sir Roger Carr and Sir Richard Olver. All three are keen supporters of the good governance ethic that ICSA champions, through their work in their own specific sectors and beyond.
Lord Hunt of Wirral (David), Chairman, Financial Services Division at DAC Beachcroft LLP Solicitors was awarded the MBE in 1973 and was appointed to the Privy Council in 1990. An MP for 21 years and a Member of the House of Lords for the last 16 years, David was a member of successive governments for 16 years, serving in the Cabinets of both Margaret Thatcher and John Major. He has just been appointed as the first Independent Non-Executive Director of the British Insurance Brokers' Association, chairs the Lending Standards Board, and is working to establish the Independent Press Standards Organisation following the Leveson Inquiry. He is President or Patron of over 50 charities and voluntary organisations and chairs McDonald's Education Company. David has been heavily involved in ICSA's London-based policy department in developing the NHS Clinical Commission Group (CCG) Code of Governance launched on 6 November 2013 to ensure better business practice and governance within the NHS.
Sir Roger Carr is a non-executive director and chairman designate of BAE Systems plc (he will succeed Sir Richard Olver as chairman of BAE Systems on 1 February 2014).A member of the UK Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Group, and President of the Confederation of British Industry from 2011-2013, he was knighted in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to business. Sir Roger’s previous roles include chair of Centrica plc, Cadbury plc, Mitchells and Butler plc, Chubb plc and Thames Water plc, as well as CEO of Williams Holdings, deputy chair of the Court and senior independent non-executive director of the Bank of England. He is also a senior advisor to Kohlberg, Kravis & Roberts and Co Ltd. He is a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce and a visiting fellow to Oxford’s Said Business School. Throughout his career he has served on a number of external committees, including the Higgs Committee on Corporate Governance and Business for New Europe, and has invested a lot of time and energy to advancing boardroom diversity and the role of women in business.
Sir Richard Olver is currently chairman of BAE Systems plc, a position he has held since 2004 and which he is due to relinquish to Sir Roger Carr on 1 February 2014. Prior to his role at BAE Systems, he was deputy group chief executive of BP after a career of more than thirty years at the company. A past non-executive director of Thomson Reuters and a member of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Business Council for Britain, he is now a member of Prime Minister David Cameron’s Business Advisory Group, and also serves as a UK business ambassador and as a member of the India/UK CEO Forum. He sits on the International Advisory Board for the Atlantic Council, is a member of the Trilateral Commission, and is also an adviser to Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, and HSBC. In addition, Sir Richard chairs the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Professional Engineering Committee, Education for Engineering Policy Group and its Development Advisory Board. A fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the City and Guilds of London Institute and The Royal Academy of Engineering, he also holds honorary doctorates in science from City University, London and Cranfield University. Sir Richard, who was awarded the prestigious non-executive director of the year award in 2012, was knighted in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to business.
