London, 28 November 2018 – The NHS merger of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust was named Governance Project of the Year at the ICSA Awards 2018 in London last night. The award, which recognises transformational governance projects that are significant in terms of their size, nature or the value they create for the organisation, saw the hospitals triumph against organisations from the corporate and sporting sectors.
The Awards, which are organised by ICSA: The Governance Institute, recognise those organisations, individuals and teams that are leading the way in good governance and also recognise those companies that are leading the way in corporate reporting. This year’s event, which was hosted by comedian Jo Caulfield, saw over 700 governance professionals gathered together at the Park Lane Hilton hotel to celebrate the achievements of their peers.
Other winners on the night included: Alison Chan, a trustee of the Alexandra Rose Charity, which gives families access to fruit and vegetables in their local communities, who won the coveted Governance Professional of the Year award. Miranda Craig of The Sage Group plc was crowned Company Secretary of the Year. Team of the Year was won by Quilter plc. Anna Machin of education charity Ark triumphed in The One to Watch category, which recognises the rising stars of the governance profession.

Now in their 10th year, the awards celebrate the work and achievements of companies, teams and individuals across the governance profession. There are 18 awards categories – seven of which are chosen following an open nomination process. This year 89 entries were received for the open nomination categories. The overall quality of entries is extremely high and the process thorough and competitive.
In 2016, we added several categories to reflect the increasing prominence of governance – Governance Professional of the Year, Governance Project of the Year and Service Provider of the Year. Entries are judged by our independent panel against our published criteria. We also added an award for Best Investor Engagement – as voted for by FTSE 350 company secretaries. This year we added a category for Best Gender Pay Gap Reporting of the Year.
The reporting categories are longlisted by Glass Lewis against ICSA’s published criteria and then a shortlist is prepared by the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association. The shortlisted entries are then passed to an independent panel of judges.
