Multi-Academy Trusts & Governance

The Government published a white paper in March 2022 setting out the plan for all children to benefit from receiving their education within a Multi Academy Trust (MAT) by 2030 (or at least the MAT needs to be in the process of formation). MATs can bring many benefits to students, staff and the local community. There are many governance considerations when setting up and running a MAT, which will be explored in this session.

We will hear insights and perspectives from two fellow CGI members, Jeff Marshall and David Gracie who have a wealth of experience of supporting MATs through numerous and varied roles.

You may already undertake a voluntary role within the local community, such as a school governor position, or be considering doing so. The session will consider how as governance professionals we can bring relevant skills and experience to, for example, a trustee role of a MAT.

Speaker

David Gracie, Director, Indigo: independent governance

David is co-owner of Indigo: independent governance which provides bespoke company secretarial and governance advisory services to companies across the UK.

Prior to joining Indigo in 2021, David was Head of Global Entity Management services at KPMG supporting multinational clients with their subsidiary governance needs, and was previously a Partner at Makinson Cowell delivering corporate governance and investor relations advice to FTSE 350 businesses.

David is a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute and is also a Trustee of the Mulberry Schools Trust, a multi-academy trust based in east London.

Jeff Marshall, Managing Director: J&G Marshall Ltd

Jeff has been a school Governor for 28 years, and Chair for 22, at one of the first Primary Schools in the country to become an academy. For over a decade, he has been an Academy Trust Member and Chair of Trustees. He is also a Trust Member of a successful Multi Academy Trust. Jeff is also MD of J&G Marshall Ltd which, since the company was formed, has supported over 280 school to academy conversions around the country. The company supports many MATs in MAT Growth Audits, MAT MOTs, Trust Mergers and Due Diligence. J&G Marshall Ltd is the Official Trust Growth Partner of the Multi Academy Trust Association. He is also MD of Marshall Professional Development Ltd, a CPD, training and coaching company.

Jeff has written accredited courses for Trustee Development, Being a CEO and Maintained School Governance. Marshall Professional Development is the Official Training Partner of the Multi Academy Trust Association. Jeff was a National Leader of Governance and Reviewer of Governing Bodies for 8 years. He has personally undertaken over 90 External Reviews of Governance on Maintained schools and Academy Trusts. Both of Jeff’s companies undertake Governance Review and Governance training work.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
