Head of Secretariat – Education

Kent based – remote with travel for meetings
£55,000

Managing a team of three and having the ability to develop governance policy & strategy for the board of trustees and build lasting relationships. This position is suited to someone with a background in CoSec or governance management that is seeking a new challenge within a large education company.

The role:
• Provide professional advice and support in the development of policies and processes to ensure the effective operation of all corporate and academic governance structures.
• The role holder will be operating mainly autonomously to make decisions, recommendations and advise senior management, board/committee Chairs
• Co-ordinate and run a range of committees and ad-hoc bodies to ensure that these have effective and efficient secretarial support and function
• Support the running of the Governance & Assurance directorate, and provide cover for the Director of Governance & Assurance in their role as Secretary to Council as required
• Support the ongoing review and drafting of the University’s governing documents to ensure they are fit for purpose and take account of relevant legal frameworks
• Provide advice, guidance, support and reports to the Director, Council, Court, Senate, and the wider teams on aspects of corporate and academic governance that are of relevance
• Monitor and continuously review academic governance structures, policies and processes to ensure that they reflect changes in higher education policy and relevant regulations.
• Provide strategic policy and professional support for the Director of Governance & Assurance on specialist projects and on strategic initiatives as appropriate, to ensure the directorate is appropriately represented and governance considerations are taken into account, where required.
• Lead, motivate and develop relevant staff, providing clear objectives and managing performance against these, to ensure that staff are appropriately motivated and trained to carry out their responsibilities to the required standards.

Requirements:
• Comfortable making autonomous decisions, offering recommendations, and advising the senior management team
• Relevant experience within the a governance function, ideally within education.
• Experience managing team members and delegating effectively for the team.
• Exposure writing and reviewing policies and reports and delivering these to senior management
