Director of Governance and Risk

The Trust has a well-earned reputation for clinical excellence in many areas. With a turnover of £750m, we provide comprehensive secondary care and a number of specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across South East Hampshire. We also offer some tertiary services to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 8,500 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth. We are recognised as a major acute hospital and are a designated cancer centre. We are also home to the Wessex Kidney Centre, which is the third largest renal unit in England, providing a comprehensive renal service to about 2.4 million adults across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the adjacent parts of Wiltshire, West Sussex, Berkshire and Surrey.

We are proud of our strong military links and host the largest of the UK’s four military hospital units, Joint Hospital Group (South). We are a major provider of education and training for clinicians in the South-East of England. Portsmouth has the second highest population density of veterans in the UK within our local community and was one of the first hospitals to be awarded Veteran Aware status. QA Hospital is a former military hospital and we are hugely committed to support our veterans.

We have a strong track record in research and innovation across the Trust and have taken steps to further enhance this reputation with the support of our university partners. We are a member of the UK University Hospital Association and were also rated “good” overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in 2019 and in July 2022 we were rated “Good” by the CQC for the second time following an inspection of our Medical Care and Urgent and Emergency Services and a well-led inspection.

We are now further progressed on the delivery of our five-year strategy, “Working Together”, which sets out an ambitious vision for our Trust - working together to drive excellence in care for our patients and communities. Our strategy is based on a sound understanding of the areas for further improvement, and on a strong commitment to working collaboratively with our key partners.
