Governors

Reports to: Chair of the Corporation
Responsible for: Governance
Contract: Voluntary
Industry/Sector: Education
Number of positions: 2
Duration of appointment: 3 years

About the Role

Being a Governor in the FE sector is like no other voluntary role – With Telford College, you will work as part of the Corporation Board, led by our experienced Chair – Paul Hinkins, in overseeing the strategic direction and pace of the college, ensuring effective oversight of a high-quality and economically focused curriculum offer, whilst ensuring organisational finances are well planned and risk is well mitigated.

The Board is ultimately accountable for the proper use of the public funds entrusted to the college.

Governors, whether in a formal meeting or in situations where they are representing the college as an ambassador, must ensure they give sufficient time to their duties and undertake the role with rigour, acting as a critical friend to the Principal & CEO, Graham Guest, and his executive leadership team.

There is an important distinction to be drawn between these responsibilities and that of day-to-day management of the college. The Corporation Board establishes and maintains the framework within which the college functions, holding the Principal & CEO and other executive leaders accountable for the effective management of the college and the execution of the strategy.

The strategic direction of the college’s development should inform the decisions of the Board in exercising its powers and undertaking the specific duties summarised below:

  • determining the educational character and mission of Telford College
  • overseeing its activities
  • the effective and efficient use of resources
  • the solvency of the institution and the Corporation Board, and safeguarding their assets
  • the appointment, grading, suspension, dismissal and determination of pay and conditions of service of holders of senior posts setting the framework for the pay and conditions of service of all other staff

Who we are looking for

With an ambitious strategy to be an ethical skills eco-system for the Marches and West Midlands by 2026, we are seeking senior and strategic leaders from the local area to join the Corporation Board at Telford College.

We are looking to engage two new Governors who have a passion for vocational and professional education and training, and a commitment to supporting the college ambition to build on the successes and use the strengths of collaborative working. This passion and commitment should be underpinned by a track record of significant and impactful leadership in one or more of the following areas of expertise:

  • Capital projects and/or procurement,
  • Education and curriculum strategy and quality assurance

These roles offer a fantastic opportunity to join an ambitious and committed Corporation Board, and genuinely have an impact on the future success of the college, the students and communities.

It is an exciting time to join the Corporation Board of Telford College, with a recently launched forward-looking Strategy and an ambition to be the very best educational provider through ensuring the college continue to make a demonstrable and positive contribution to the communities they serve.

The Board recognises that they are not presently reflective of the diverse communities served by Telford College, and it is due to this that the Board would particularly encourage applications of interest from first time Governors, as they provide a comprehensive induction and development programmes to ensure success for all members.

Closing date: Monday 29th November 2021
