Committee Chair, Members of the Governing Body | New College Worcester

Set on a picturesque campus with views of the Malvern Hills, New College Worcester is a unique education provider, currently searching for four new Governors to shape and support their provision.

New College Worcester is a unique college, delivering education to young people who are blind or vision impaired (VI) in a beautiful, rural setting to the southwest of Worcester. The college has a long and proud history. Initially established in 1886, the college moved to its current site over a century ago. Today, the college welcomes students from across the country. As a provider of both day and residential education, the majority of students attend from outside of the immediate, local area.

Senior Leaders and Governors have worked tirelessly to ensure that the college has the appropriate mix of education and curriculum knowledge, coupled with expertise relating to visual impairments to create a successful and ambitious learning environment for their students.

At present, the college currently has 75 students enrolled, with additional capacity to enrol a further small number. Alongside the continuous quality improvement processes relating to education, the college have ambitious plans for the future. There is a desire to expand and modernise accommodation to increase capacity, whilst adapting and developing the wider site more generally.

Who we’re looking for:

The college is seeking to appoint a total of four new Governors to support two different committees.

Firstly, two new Governors will sit on the college’s Residential Care and Safeguarding Committee (RCSC), including one being appointed as Chair, with the incumbent looking to step down after many years of success.

Secondly, two other Governors will be appointed to the Education Services Committee which seeks to support the continued excellence of educational provision at the college.

With regards to the role of Chair of the RCSC, the postholder will need to have extensive experience in the safeguarding of young people along with up-to-date knowledge of relevant policies and practice. This does not need to have been in a formal education setting.

To complement the skill set of the new RCSC Chair, the college is looking to appoint a second Governor to this committee who has experience within the residential care sector – especially where this relates to young people.

It would be useful for candidates of these RCSC roles lived within a commutable distance of the college, as there will be a requirement to attend a minimum of one meeting per month each at the college, to assist and advise on relevant matters.

In terms of the Education Services Committee roles, individuals interested in these roles will need an in-depth understanding of education, preferably gained through a delivery background at a senior level. This does not need to be within a specialist education setting; a background in mainstream education would be welcomed. Applications to these roles are welcomed from across the country.

It is expected that all Governors, (where not a Chair), would need to dedicate a minimum of 4 days per term to the role. All meetings of the governing body and its sub-committees currently take place during the college day.

Closing date: By 12 p.m. Monday 11th July 2022
