The Kingsbury Charity is looking for a new trustee to join them in their important work to provide relief for the poor and needy of Kingsbury.
Applications close at 9 a.m. Tuesday 9th January 2024
Who we are
The Kingsbury Charity was formed to provide relief for residents of the ancient parish of Kingsbury when in need.
Originating from a bequest in 1719 of a Mr. Richard Bowater, he left this bequest to the Parish of Kingsbury to assist the poor and needy with the necessities of life and to supply apprentices with the tools of their trade. This Charity was later amalgamated with the Charity of Francis Perry Stubbs in 1882.
Kingsbury Charity’s purpose is to help the poor and needy of Kingsbury. This is done mainly through its almshouses, as well as by making grants to other charities. The almshouses provide subsidised accommodation for elderly local people who are of limited means.
The charity is governed by a board of six trustees who are supported by an honorary treasurer, an honorary secretary and two caretakers.
About the role
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that the Kingsbury Charity achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the Kingsbury Charity has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision.
Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.
Duties include:
- Support and provide advice on the Kingsbury Charity’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee Kingsbury Charity’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Review and approve Kingsbury Charity’s financial statements.
- Provide support and challenge to Kingsbury Charity’s Chair of the Trustees in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in Kingsbury Charity’s operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of Kingsbury Charity’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Kingsbury Charity’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of Kingsbury Charity’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
There are 8-12 Board meetings annually – usually every 4-6 weeks. Currently, meetings are held in person at Bowater Close or remotely via Zoom. Time and days are by agreement of the Board. The annual time commitment for this role is expected to be approximately 20 days in total.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for a new trustee who is willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
In particular, we are looking for the following personal skills and qualities:
- Willingness and ability to understand and accept your responsibilities and liabilities as a trustee and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
- Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
- Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Enthusiasm for our vision and mission.
- Willingness to lead according to our values.
- Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
