Who we are.

ArtsEd has become widely known in many circles for its focus on detail and a passion for quality in its educational offerings. Rated ‘Outstanding’ in its most recent Ofsted report on undergraduate degree provision (DaDA funding) in 2023, the organisation, operating from a single site in Chiswick, also runs a Day School with a focus on the Arts, as well as a Sixth-Form. In its degree provision, ArtsEd sits amongst the top national and international performing arts education providers. Unique in its offering of school to degree level education, it is this holistic approach which draws both a high calibre of students and staff, the former of which go on to agencies and notable careers post-study.

Ambitious, dedicated to emerging artists, nurturing talent and driving ambition, ArtsEd has an incredible future and presents an attractive opportunity for a lover of the Performing Arts and advocate of arts education to become its next Chair.

About the role.

The Arts Educational Schools, or ‘ArtsEd’, is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. The organisation has a board of non-executive trustees who are legally responsible for the overall management and control of the Schools, with day-to-day responsibilities delegated to the Principal and leadership team.

The Board and Trustees meet at least three times per year, overseeing the governance of ArtsEd with the support of a number of committees that together cover finance, welfare, Health and Safety, compliance, risk management, the Day School and Sixth Form, and Higher Education.

The Chair of the Board provides effective leadership to the governing body of trustees – no more than 15 members – by chairing Board meetings throughout the year, working closely with the senior leadership team, guiding strategy and acting as an ambassador for ArtsEd to promote the interests of the Schools.

The Chair of the Board will ensure that the Board fulfils its legal duties by operating with the highest standards of governance and probity, and in accordance with the Articles of Association, the Charity Commission and other regulators. The Board will ensure that ArtsEd meets its fiduciary and regulatory requirements in line with those agencies that regulate the activities of the Day School, Sixth Form and Higher Education provision. This includes bodies such as Ofsted, the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the Office for Students and the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education.

Who are we looking for?

ArtsEd is seeking a Chair who can demonstrate:

  • Experience of governance and leadership, preferably in an educational setting that has undergone change.
  • Strong people skills.
  • A strong commitment to the School’s performing arts-based educational values and culture of equality, inclusivity and diversity.
  • An ability to meet a generous time commitment, preferably resident within an easy travelling distance of ArtsEd.

ArtsEd is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff (permanent and visiting) and volunteers to share this commitment; all staff are required to undergo background checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023 regulations and to hold an enhanced DBS.
