Founded in 1963, Migrant Help is one of the largest charities supporting people impacted by displacement and exploitation in the UK. Their vision is for a global society that protects vulnerable people, treats them with respect and enables them to thrive as individuals.
Migrant Help provides guidance and assistance to people seeking asylum and refugees, and accommodation and support to survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery. The charity’s income is c£45.7m, a large proportion of which comes through statutory funding. An award-winning social enterprise, Clear Voice, an interpreting and translation service whose profits support the charity’s mission, is the trading branch of the organisation.
About the role
You will play a pivotal role in Migrant Help's continued growth and development, during a crucial period focused on supporting those affected by displacement and exploitation, enabling us to bridge community gaps and unite services to assist those most in need. As Chair, you play an essential leadership role in maintaining a positive and inclusive culture across the charity.
You will provide strategic leadership to the charity and our Board, ensuring effective governance through long-term planning, budgeting, risk management, and legal compliance. Working closely with the Chief Executive and Executive Team, you will help drive the charity’s objectives while fostering collaboration between the Board and the Executive Team through mentorship, constructive challenge, and development. Additionally, you will act as an ambassador for Migrant Help, building relationships with external partners, corporate supporters, and major donors to advance its mission.
What we are looking for
We are seeking an experienced leader to guide transformative strategies and shape the charity’s future. The role involves strengthening the charity’s existing work, exploring new opportunities, and diversifying funding to ensure sustainability. You will being strategic management and governance skills, an inclusive leadership style, and strong interpersonal abilities. You will be able to show independent judgment, balancing diplomacy with assertiveness, and demonstrate a commitment to dedicating the necessary time to this vital role.
Knowledge of charity finance or public sector commissioning and prior trustee experience are desirable but not essential. Above all, we value a deep compassion for the challenges faced by displaced and exploited individuals.
Migrant Help particularly welcomes applications from individuals with first-hand or indirect experience of being a refugee or migrant into the UK, either recently or in past generations.
