About Be Free Young Carers
Be Free Young Carers, established in 1994, is the only charity in Oxfordshire dedicated to supporting young carers. We provide practical and emotional support to young carers and young adult carers through home visits, free activities, and trips for those aged 8 to 17.
We support young carers by expanding their life opportunities and strengthening their emotional and social wellbeing, resilience, and development—because we passionately believe every young carer deserves the chance to reach their full adult potential, free from the limits of early responsibilities.
About the role
As Chair, you will provide strategic leadership to the organisation and the Board of Trustees, ensuring a clear focus on our charitable purpose and maximising the positive impact we deliver to young carers across Oxfordshire.
You will guide the Board to stay aligned with our mission and values, enabling us to deliver real public benefit. You will also help shape policy, foster effective decision-making, and ensure the governance framework remains strong and effective.
As a visible and influential figurehead for the Charity, and your ability to bring impartiality, objectivity, and insight to Board discussions will be essential. It will be your role to ensure the Board remains skilled, inclusive, and equipped to meet both current and future challenges.
Who we are looking for
We seek a strong, strategic leader with experience in governance or committee work who possesses excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
Essential qualities include tact, diplomacy, discretion, and a fair, impartial approach to decision-making. Ideally, candidates will have a background in social care, education, or the youth sector, along with connections across the voluntary sector and related networks.
