This is an opportunity to lead the board of an organisation raising funds to change the world one smile at a time.

Smile Train is an international non-profit headquartered in New York while the, Smile Train UK team are based in London. We are a fundraising charity supporting our global organisation to fulfil our mission to transform the life of every person impacted by cleft lip and palate.

Over 200,000 new babies with clefts are born every year globally. Surgery can cost from as little as £150 and can take just 45 minutes to change a child’s life forever. We train and support local doctors and medical professionals in their own communities to provide free life-changing comprehensive cleft treatment to our beneficiaries.

Our sustainable model has allowed us to reach 1.5 million children in 90+ countries to date and we’re just getting started. We are truly changing the world one smile at a time.

Smile Train UK (£7.88M) is a subsidiary fundraising charity of Smile Train Inc, raising funds in the UK to give every baby born with a cleft a brighter future. Income for FY21 was £8.5m and the fundraising income target for FY22 is £9.1m. We have six members of staff alongside our Director Ian Vallance, all of whom are specialists in raising funds for our global programmes – changing lives and communities around the world.

Our board consists of three UK-based Trustees and Smile Train Inc’s Chair and Chief Executive. Following a governance review and as we look to create and embark on a new strategic phase, we are looking to appoint a new Chair and a number of new Trustees.

We seek a new Chair who can join us at this exciting stage of development, who can support us to build a new strategy, who is aligned with our values and mission, who has a strong understanding of fundraising and robust experience of charity governance.

We are looking for someone who can bring experience of leadership and be an ambassador for our cause. We are looking for a Chair who can build consensus, be financially astute and is passionate about our mission. This is an opportunity to lead our board at a time of evolution, growth and innovation.

We are also looking to appoint a number of new Trustees with experience in fundraising. This could be in individual giving, major donors, corporate partnerships or trusts, grants and foundations. We are also looking for Trustees with experience in strategic finance and public relations who can support us to grow and develop.

The Board meets 4-5 times a year with a mix of face-to-face and virtual meetings plus an annual strategy away day. We expect the time commitment for the Chair to be 15-20 days per year, while the Trustees are expected to commit between 8-12 days per year.

Closing date: Monday 17th January 2022
