About the Institute

The Chartered Governance Institute is the qualifying and membership body for governance with 130 years’ experience of educating and supporting governance professionals. It has almost 40,000 members and students worldwide.  The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland (CGIUKI) is the largest division within the group, with approximately 14,500 members and students located in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and associated territories, which include the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.

Purpose of job

The Brand and Communications Manager is responsible for the positioning, brand and awareness raising of the work and impact of CGIUKI as the leading body on governance in the UK and in its overseas branches. You will develop a communications strategy for CGIUKI, working with stakeholders across the Institute which will include a calendar of news stories and content pieces aligned to key themes and issues faced by the sector. It is expected that some content will be pitched to sector media. You will also be responsible for the overall use of branding by stakeholders and third parties and will create processes to ensure correct usage. You will have overall responsibility for the social media channels, ensuring that engagement is strong.

You will also be responsible for internal communications, which will include populating an intranet and creating engaging, supportive content for employees, in line with the Institute’s values.

Key Accountabilities

  • Create and implement an external communications strategy working across the organisation to develop creative news/content/media opportunities in line with the CGIUKI overall strategy and yearly plans.
  • Create and implement an internal communications strategy, working with stakeholders from Marketing, HR and senior leadership team to support employees and build our reputation as a good employer.
  • Be responsible for the brand guidelines and style guide and oversee the development of branded templates for use by stakeholders. Ensure there are processes in place to enforce correct usage.
  • Create and maintain news content for the CGIUKI website, as well as oversee the social media channels – LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, and create a growth and engagement strategy to work to on these channels.
  • Build and maintain links with relevant press and other media and opinion formers to build awareness of our areas of expertise and facilitate media coverage of our priorities and activities to our key external audiences.
  • Monitor and respond to the external media agenda when there is crossover with the purpose of CGIUKI and its priorities, including our social media content to issue timely responses, ensuring CGIUKI messages and themes are presented consistently.
  • Work with internal stakeholders and Content team to ensure we maximise the PR potential of our initiatives.
  • Provide brand and PR support to key events such as the Annual Governance Conference, Annual Awards, Summits and smaller conferences.
  • Work with Head of External Affairs to produce corporate literature such as the Annual Report.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend events as a representative for the Institute as required
  • Occasional early mornings, late evenings and overnight travel may be required.

Person Specification

Knowledge
  • A good understanding of how to shape news stories and ensure messaging is well positioned.
  • Some knowledge of corporate business, charities, professional associations is desired.
  • A good understanding of communication and content channels and how to use them effectively, particularly social media
  • Understanding the importance of brand consistency in communications
Experience
  • At least five years in a brand marketing and/or communications role managing content creation for use across a range of communications channels.
  • Experience of writing interesting and accurate articles from technical information.
  • Experience of planning and developing profile-raising media campaigns
  • Brand management, both in design and messaging
  • Desirable to have internal communications experience too.
  • Line management of at least one team member
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
Skills
  • Excellent writer with attention to detail
  • Highly organised with ability to project manage campaigns, delivery of content and publications.
  • Stakeholder management, to ensure that the media angle is planned for early in projects.
  • Excellent relationship building and networking skills
  • Excellent planning, prioritisation and time management skills
  • Process-driven with an ability to multi-task effectively
  • Competent user of MS Office applications, CMS tools, social media platforms and Google analytics.
