Level 4 Certificate in Corporate Governance

Student status

While you are registered as a student, you can use the term ‘Chartered Governance Institute student’ to describe your status. However, you are not a member of theChartered Governance Institute and you cannot describe yourself as a Chartered Secretary/Governance professional.

Professional ethics and conduct

As a student, however, we expect that your professional ethics and conduct will be equal to that of a Chartered Governance Institute member while you are studying. As such, when you agree to the student rules and regulations, you agree to abide by the:

  • Code of Professional Ethics and Conduct
  • Instructions for Exam Candidates

Registering on the course

Although you can register at any time, you should contact us to check when the next exam is scheduled and consider whether you have sufficient time to prepare. You need to complete the registration process and pay the full course fee in order to register.

Entering for exams

When you register, you need to state when you are going to attempt the exam for the first time. You need to choose one of the next two exam sessions on the registration form.

If you choose the first exam session and you subsequently change your mind, you can pay an administrative fee to defer the exam to a later date as long as you do this before the last week of March for the June exam or the last week of September for the November exam (a list of exact dates will be available on the website shortly).

Re-sits

If you fail the exam at your first attempt, you have three opportunities to re-sit. You need to pay a separate re-sit fee, this is not covered in your course registration fee.

If you need to re-sit the exam, try not to delay this too long. You will need to successfully pass the exam within two years of registering for the course.

Exam attendance

If you don’t attend an exam, this counts as a ‘fail’ and is one of the four attempts at the exam which you are allowed. If there is a reason why you can’t attend, contact us as early as possible to let us know and we may change your ‘fail’ result to ‘withdrawn’. A ‘withdrawn’ exam would not count as one of your four attempts. If you cannot attend the exam due to serious illness or bereavement, please contact us.

If you do not enter for exams for two consecutive exam sessions, you should discuss your reasons for delaying with us. You can be removed if you do not sit any exams over a two-year period.

Please read the full student rules and regulations.
