Summary: Neill McWilliams, Governance Programmes Director Leader at KCB Global, reflects on forty years of supporting governance professionals and outlines how a new partnership with Belstar Training Services will expand access to high‑quality governance education in Mauritius.
This year marks a significant milestone for us at KCB Global. For forty years we have focused on one thing: supporting the development of governance professionals. Throughout that time our work has remained closely connected with the qualifications of The Chartered Governance Institute and the evolving needs of the governance profession.
Over those four decades the role of governance professionals has changed dramatically. What was once often seen as a largely technical or administrative function has become a central part of how organisations operate effectively, manage risk and maintain trust. Boards today rely on governance professionals not only for compliance expertise but also for strategic insight, sound judgement and the ability to navigate increasingly complex regulatory and technological environments.
This evolution is not unique to one country. Around the world we are seeing organisations place greater emphasis on governance capability and professional expertise. Mauritius is no exception. The country has made significant progress in strengthening governance frameworks and aligning with international standards as it continues to develop its position as a trusted international financial centre and regional hub for investment.
Governance skills in demand in Mauritius
As that progress continues, there is a growing demand for skilled governance professionals who can support boards, guide organisations through regulatory complexity and help maintain the standards that underpin confidence in the market. Education and professional development therefore play a crucial role in sustaining that progress.
That is why we are particularly pleased to be working with Belstar Training Services in Mauritius through our new partnership. Belstar brings a strong local reputation and understanding of the Mauritian professional landscape, while KCB contributes four decades of experience delivering tuition for Chartered Governance Institute qualifications to students around the world.
One of the things we have learned over the years is that effective governance education requires more than simply delivering course content. Students benefit from access to experienced tutors, practical exam preparation tools and learning environments that help them apply theory to real governance challenges. Through this partnership Mauritian students will gain access to KCB’s learning platform and our Companion Examination Practice Tool, which has been designed specifically to support students preparing for CGIUKI examinations. Belstar tutors will benefit from our dedicated support in ensuring the highest quality delivery.
Accessible pathways and practical support
Importantly, Belstar’s recognition by the Higher Education Commission means that employers in Mauritius can recover a significant proportion of programme fees. This helps make governance education more accessible to professionals who want to develop their careers and strengthen their organisations.
The partnership will also allow Mauritian students to access a wider pathway of qualifications validated by CGIUKI, including the Certificate in Corporate Compliance and Governance and our MSc Governance programme. These programmes are designed to combine academic understanding with practical professional skills — something that governance professionals increasingly need in their day-to-day roles.
With the support of employers, the Certificate in Corporate Compliance and Governance, validated by the CGIUKI has been localised to meet the specific needs of the Mauritian market and will launch in September 2026.
For me personally, one of the most rewarding aspects of working in governance education is seeing how these qualifications help individuals develop their careers and contribute meaningfully to the organisations they serve. Governance professionals play a vital role in supporting responsible leadership, strong decision-making and long-term organisational success.
As Mauritius continues to strengthen its governance leadership in the region, supporting the next generation of governance professionals will be essential. Partnerships like the one between KCB Global and Belstar Training aim to contribute to that goal by ensuring students have access to high-quality professional education and practical support as they progress through their studies.
After forty years dedicated to governance education, it remains a privilege to work with professionals who are committed to strengthening governance standards in their organisations and their countries. We look forward to supporting many more students in Mauritius as they begin or continue their journey into the governance profession. I hope to meet as many CGI students, employers and members on my visit in May.
